Austintown Middle School students raise $1,500 for a great cause
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Don't give up. Don't ever give up. Those are the famous words spoken by former college basketball coach Jimmy Valvano at the 1993 ESPY awards, just weeks before he died of cancer.
They're also the words that have inspired more than 100 sixth graders at Austintown Middle School to raise $1,500 for the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
For their accomplishments, student enjoyed an activity filled Jimmy V Day.
"We have different stations and at each station you do an activity and when you complete that activity you get one piece of information about a certain type of cancer," said Kaitlin Sciortino, a student a Austintown Middle School.
"Just knowing there is a lot of sick people out there that need help made me want to help them out," said sixth grader Stevie Woodberry.
All of the money raised was collected in less than one month.
