Austintown Schools Will Feed Students During Summer

While students spend the next few months taking a break from the classroom, some also will be without steady nutritional meals.

"We have a large amount of free and reduced applications that come in every year," said Tascin Brooks, food service director for Austintown Local Schools. "One of the things we're doing is offering this because summer's so important. The kids are out playing, using extra calories."

Starting on Monday, the Austintown Local School District will open up Austintown Middle School and Woodside Elementary every weekday for breakfast and lunch.

"A lot of times it's because parents are working," said Brooks. "Parents aren't able to provide that for their children. So we want to make sure that opportunity is available."

The $90,000 program is funded by the USDA.There are no income requirements and it's open to anyone ages 1 to 18.

Working mom Luanne Fox plans on sending her five kids.

"They have the structure," said Fox. "This is the time I'm gonna eat. This is the food I'm gonna eat. I know it's gonna be well nutritional and it's not just junk food all the time."

Transportation is not provided for this program, so the students are responsible for getting themselves to both of the sites. And the district said the other reason why they chose the middle school and Woodside Elementary is because both are easily accessible to the children.

"It's definitely a balanced meal. You're getting your grains, your proteins, fruits, vegetables and your milk," said Brooks. "Its a balanced meal and it's free. We hope the community partakes in it."

Breakfast will be served at Austintown Middle School on Raccoon Road from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Monday through Friday. Lunch will be served at the middle school from noon to 1:15 p.m.

Breakfast will be served at Woodside Elementary School, 4105 Elmwood Drive, from 8:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Monday through Friday. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Guests are to enter through the front doors of both schools.

I think that what Tascin Brooks is doing for these children during the summer is amazing. There are so many parents out there struggling and this just eases their minds just a little bit! Way to care for the children Tascin! Great Job
